Nothing is better than a solid rom-com binge. But finding the perfect one can be a bit overwhelming with so many options out there. Are you ever sitting down wanting to watch a cute rom-com but have no idea where to start or which would be the best? Well, worry no more! We’ve compiled a list of the top 10 romantic comedies of all time, guaranteed to make you laugh, swoon, and maybe even shed a tear or two.
10. 13 Going On 30
A classic case of “be careful what you wish for.” 13 Going on 30 stars Jennifer Garner playing as Jenna Rink, an awkward teen who wishes to be “thirty, flirty, and thriving” after a disastrous birthday party. Miraculously, that’s exactly what happens, and she wakes up as a 30-year-old — only to find herself disoriented in a life she doesn’t recognize. Seeking help from her childhood friend Matty (Mark Ruffalo), Jenna realizes she dislikes the person she’s become. As she attempts to reconnect with her true self and make amends, she learns that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Ultimately, she finds herself back at 13, appreciating the present and those around her.
9. Mama Mia!
Mama Mia! follows Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) who, in an attempt to discover which of three men is her father, invites them all to her wedding without telling her mother (Meryl Streep). As Sophie spends time with each of them, her mother eventually finds out. The film features incredible musical numbers, with songs originally sung by ABBA and adapted to the cast’s voices. If you love musicals, this is definitely worth a watch!
8. Bridesmaids
Although mostly known as a comedy, this movie definitely has tons of romanic moments as well! Starring Kristin Wiig, whose long-time best friend is getting married, Maya Rudolph, she is plagued with the task of maid of honor. This takes her and other bridesmaids down a wild road, but along the way she meets Chris O’Dowd who ends up making things a little better. This is easily one of the funniest movies we’ve ever seen!
7. Pretty Woman
Julia Roberts and Richard Geer star in this movie about a Hollywood escort and a successful businessman. Richard decides to hire her for a week for multiple business and social functions. Throughout the week, their relationship progresses, and he even surprises her with an incredible shopping spree. Their friendship turned romantic relationship leaves them and others close to them with a lot of questions. After the week is over, Julia leaves but (spoiler alert!) ultimately Richard goes to save her. A must-watch.
6. Clueless
Speaking of hilarious films, Clueless starring Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd centers around Cher (Silverstone), the queen bee of her high school. In an attempt to seem less materialistic, Cher decides to do things “out of the kindness of her own heart” — or, as some might say, for external validation from her ex-stepbrother (Rudd). This includes setting up two teachers romantically and giving a new girl a complete makeover. As the story unfolds, Cher undergoes a self-realization and learns what it truly means to help others and become a better person. Just like Cher said about Dionne, I give this movie major props for their courageous fashion efforts! If nothing else, you will most definitely love the iconic looks they give.
5. Sleepless in Seattle
Another classic 90s rom-com stars the legendary Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. In the movie, Tom’s wife recently passed away which causes his son to call into a radio show hoping for his dad to find love again. Meg, who just happens to be listening to the radio, decides to write to Tom and his son suggesting they meet on the top of the Empire State Building after watching An Affair to Remember. It was only in the finale scene that they finally meet, and as they say, the rest is history. From Nora Ephron’s writing and directing to an amazing cast, this movie has it all.
4. Notting Hill
Is there a more iconic rom-com duo in history than Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant? In Notting Hill, Hugh plays a modest bookshop owner while Julia plays a very successful actress. Naturally, they have the cutest run-in to each other, and the rest is history. This movie has some of the best line deliveries including “I’m also just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.” How does your heart not melt?
3. 10 Things I Hate About You
10 Things I Hate About You stars Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynik. It’s a 90s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” only it’s set in an American high school. This cult classic is based around Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character Cameron having a crush on Larisa’s character Bianca. Cameron tries to get Patrick (Heath Leger) to take out Bianca’s sister Kat (Julia Stiles) since their dad has a strict dating policy. At first, Kat wants nothing to do with Patrick but as time goes on she lowers her guard. It’s so hard not to fall in love with this movie, it’s truly a cult classic.
2. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Easily one of our favorite films of all time! Kate Hudson plays Andie Anderson, a young magazine writer at Composure. She’s tasked with writing an article on what not to do when dating. Matthew McConaughey plays Benjamin Barry, who makes a bet with his colleagues that he can make any woman fall in love with him in 10 days. What could possibly go wrong? Of course, these two meet and you get to see firsthand how their dare-turned-relationship really unfolds.
1. When Harry Met Sally
The greatest romantic comedy film of all time. The movie asks the age-old question of whether men and women just be friends. The movie starred Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal and showed their friendship turned romance turned friendship turned romance(?) relationship. Aside from everything else, what makes it stand out as a classic is that so many people can relate to it when navigating their own relationships.
